Image Focal Point
Romeo Van Snick
It would be amazing if the image editor in the Media Library allowed for the selection of a focal point of the image so devs can crop responsive images accordingly.

Hi Strapi team

Our company needs Image Focal Point in production and we would really like to see it included in the next release cycle. This is one of those Media Library capabilities that becomes a real blocker once you have a large asset library and you reuse the same images across many breakpoints and placements like hero banners, cards, and social previews.
Right now, without a per asset focal point or safe area, crops often cut off the subject and editors end up re uploading multiple pre cropped variants. It adds constant manual work, makes the asset library messy, and leads to inconsistent results across channels. Even a first version that lets editors set a focal point on the asset and ensures generated formats respect it would immediately unlock a lot for teams like ours.
There is already an RFC and sample PR here

is there any update?

We've submitted an RFC which also include a sample PR for discussion here: https://github.com/strapi/rfcs/pull/58
Let's see if it will receive positive feedbacks from the maintainers 🤞

Currently, Strapi is using cropperjs, we could take advantage of this in order to get a focal point.

I would also love to see a feature to set the Focal Point, since it is quite tedious to rely on cropping images yourself. It would be nice if it could figure itself out how it has to crop the image to keep the Focal Point centered. Pimcore is doing it very well, see here: https://pimcore.com/docs/pimcore/10.3/Development_Documentation/Assets/Working_with_Thumbnails/Image_Thumbnails.html#page_Focal-Point
